Meet the Ecosystem Fund Recipients: Northern Mosaic Network

Ecosystem Fund Profile

In Yellowknife, a city of just 20,000 people in the Northwest Territories, access to resources can be limited compared to other regions. Northern Mosaic Network is committed to supporting the 2SLGBTQI+ community in this context. That’s why it was selected as a recipient of the Ecosystem Fund — a grant program from the Government of Canada and Canada’s 2SLGBTQI+ Chamber of Commerce (CGLCC) designed to break down barriers for 2SLGBTQI+ entrepreneurs by supporting community organizations that foster sustainability, drive growth, and promote innovation.

With support from the Fund, Northern Mosaic Network will develop a training course, launch a mentorship program with successful business owners, and host seminars featuring knowledgeable guest speakers. Embracing the community-centered spirit of Yellowknife, the organization will also establish a Queer Market Space — a consistent venue for 2SLGBTQI+ business owners to sell their products and services.

“We want to give people the opportunity to receive support through the entire process in a structured time frame, provide them with support of people who already own businesses, and then give them the safety net to try out whatever it is that they want to try in a designated location,” said Chelsea Thacker, Executive Director of Northern Mosaic Network.

Chelsea noted that commercial real estate is expensive in Yellowknife, making storefronts out of reach for many small business owners. “This way, with the Market Space, we can provide a consistent opportunity for people to engage with 2SLGBTQI+ businesses.”

The 10-person mentorship program is open to individuals at any stage of business development — whether they have a full plan or just an idea. Through these initiatives, Northern Mosaic Network is creating safer spaces for 2SLGBTQI+ people and business owners, giving them opportunities to thrive.

“We’ve seen how successful these types of mentorship programs are for 2SLGBTQI+ entrepreneurs, so we’re excited to see the confidence the participants gain from the program,” said Tyler Demers, CGLCC’s Director of Grants and Program Development. “Northern Mosaic Network is bringing essential resources to the Northwest Territories, and we’re thrilled the Ecosystem Fund can support impactful organizations like this.”
