Ecosystem Fund Profile
For youth in remote Northern communities, it can be difficult to find representation in the entrepreneurship space, especially in remote Northern communities. The 2025 Ecosystem Fund recipient Small Economy Works exists to change that. Through culturally responsive and entrepreneurial training, the non-profit creates platforms, programs, and opportunities designed for young people in Northern, rural, and remote communities. With $300,000 from the Fund, Small Economy Works will create a new program specifically for 2SLGBTQI+ Inuit.
Small Economy Works’ new 12-week Entrepreneurship Leadership program aims to create more inclusive spaces that connect 2SLGBTQI+ individuals to valuable resources, support, role models, subject matter experts, and mentors, enabling them to thrive and contribute to economic growth in their communities. The program targets Inuit primarily living in Inuit Nunangat while also reaching urban Inuit.
“We start off the program with some self-reflection where the participants take a look at themselves and identify their own strengths,” said Cora Kavyaktok, a Territory Lead at Small Economy Works. “From there, we start looking at it with a community lens and identify the gaps their business idea could fill. By the time they’re done in the program, they have a business model all set up so that they can take that and start on their business plan.”
With resources such as subject matter expert videos featuring successful queer Inuit entrepreneurs, the program hopes to inspire youth and allow them to see their own businesses succeeding.
“Representation is so important, and we’re excited to see the confidence participants will gain from the resources that come from this program,” said Tyler Demers, Canada’s 2SLGBTQI+ Chamber of Commerce’s (CGLCC) Director, Grants and Program Development. “We’re glad the Ecosystem Fund can support the important and impactful work Small Economy Works does for the community.”
The Ecosystem Fund is a grant program by the Government of Canada and CGLCC as part of the 2SLGBTQI+ Entrepreneurship Program and it aims to break down barriers for 2SLGBTQI+ entrepreneurs by supporting community organizations that enhance sustainability, drive growth, and promote innovation.
“We’re really excited about the possibilities this funding will bring and how it will make our programming even more inclusive,” said Kavyaktok. “Our little community of Inuit is small but mighty, and we can do amazing things when we all stand together.”
