Meet the Ecosystem Fund Recipients: Pride PEI and Music PEI

Ecosystem Fund Profile

Prince Edward Island has a vibrant entertainment scene filled with musical artists small and large — it’s part of the island’s charm. However, Pride PEI’s Executive Director, Cameron Cassidy, learned that many musical artists don’t see themselves as entrepreneurs because they don’t see their art as a business venture.

It made her think: what can Pride PEI do to help 2SLGBTQI+ artists market themselves and make a sustainable income off their music?

Enter the Ecosystem Fund — a grant program by the Government of Canada and Canada’s 2SLGBTQI+ Chamber of Commerce (CGLCC) created to break down barriers for 2SLGBTQI+ entrepreneurs by supporting community organizations that enhance sustainability, drive growth, and promote innovation. Music PEI, a non-profit devoted to advancing the careers of PEI musicians and industry professionals, and Pride PEI have received $160,000 to create resources and mentorship for 2SLGBTQI+ musical artists and other local entrepreneurs.

“We want to instill confidence in artists that they can earn a living from their art and expand their reach. We hope to give 2SLGBTQI+ people the tools and connections they need to bring their business to the next level,” said Cameron.

In Canada, musical artists make an average income of $17,900 — less than half of the average Canadian worker. A CGLCC and Deloitte study reported that 20 per cent of respondents experienced challenges scaling their business as a result of being part of the 2SLGBTQI+ community, citing such barriers as access to mentorship, financing, and global trade. Pride PEI and Music PEI want to close these gaps.

The first step in this project is to conduct an analysis that identifies these gaps, then from there, Pride PEI and Music PEI will create resources that help address those barriers and bring more opportunities for queer entrepreneurs who want to explore the intersection of art and entrepreneurship.

“This is what the Ecosystem Fund is about — giving 2SLGBTQI+ entrepreneurs the tools they need to run a thriving business,” said Tyler Demers, CGLCC’s Director, Grants and Program Development. “We’re excited to see artists turn their passion into a business venture because of this comprehensive program through Pride PEI and Music PEI.”
